There are so many types of illustrations that whenever I say that I am an illustrator and don‘t have a chance to add what I am actually illustrating — a big baboon immediately starts playing drums in my head shouting that I am being not clear enough.

So, I made a list of just some illustrator‘s specialties:

  1. Book illustration.
  2. Advertisement illustration.
  3. Stamp illustration.
  4. Cartoon illustration.
  5. Comic illustration.
  6. Fashion illustration.
  7. Car design illustration.
  8. Document design illustration.
  9. Botanical illustration.
  10. Biology illustration.
  11. Food illustration.
  12. Repeat pattern illustration.
  13. Ornamental illustration.
  14. Logo illustration.
  15. Packaging illustration.
  16. Furniture design illustration.
  17. Graffiti illustration.
  18. Tattoo illustration.
  19. Architecture illustration.
  20. Poster illustration.

These are just a few types that were on top of my head, there are many more of course.

So, when the artist states himself as an illustrator, he usually is specializing in three-five types of illustration, sometimes more, but never in all of them.

If you‘re looking for someone who could do both fashion and comic book illustration — be very specific because fields are totally different and you probably end up hiring two artists anyway.
